Because of our undying patriotism, we decided to come home to America for the 4th of July. First we had to drive through hours more of Gravel roads and Canadian farmland, and smuggle? FuzzyNutz back in. We encountered two American Border Guards on the way back in. The bad cop could not understand how Canada would get us from Philadelphia to California. It was like he had never heard of a road trip before. Once again, for as many concerns as he had he never asked about the hamster cage. Welcome home FuzzyNutz.
We drove through Detroit, the rumors are true, and on to University of Michigan. It was a brief stop in Ann Arbor; coffee, sandwiches, pictures, pizza, and gone. Next stop was Benton Harbor on Lake Michigan, might as well have been Detroit. Fortunately the neighboring town, St. Joseph, was a nice little beach town and provided a perfect backdrop for toasting the Founding Fathers for ensuring my right to drop the F-bomb without a financial consequence.
The fire works didn't start until 11pm, with us being about 20 miles from the time zone change and a bit higher North, it didn't get dark until quarter of.

Ahhhh Youth
We drove another endless trek through unpaved farmland to our next campsite at Rondeau Provincial Park. We didn't do much on day 1 and by Day 2 we were drinking wine with lunch. The bottle didn't last long and the night was young so we headed over to our camping neighbors' site, a group of college aged and recent graduates there to celebrate the long Canada Day weekend. We bartered tequila for beer and had enough fun that the park rangers had to stop by to remind us that cursing loudly is a fine worthy offense, $150 Canadian per F-bomb. We made a bunch of jokes about free speech in whispered tones and thanked our new friends for the beer and company. We left the tequila with them, a token of our appreciation.

Smugglers?
We crossed into Canada, ensuring that we were going in the complete opposite direction of our destination. The border guard was a real hardass and refused to believe that we were not moving to Canada ... Rhhiiight. He either didn't notice or didn't care about FuzzyNutz.
We Checked out a Butterfly conservatory and the Canadian circus that is Niagra Falls. We then slowly made our way across endless farmland on gravel and dirt roads, not what we expected, to our desired resting area of Long Point Provincial Park. It was pretty solid beach camping surrounded by enough Poison Ivy to kill our fun for the rest of the trip.

New York State
Our hosts in Eden NY, Barb and Joe, met us with open arms and an open home well stocked with food, booze and great company. They were very helpful instructing us on the best ways of visiting the local sights and sampling the local fare. We spent hours talking and bird watching in their back yard where we saw our first Peleated? Woodpecker, the Woody Woodpecker type. Joe smoked us some mean BBQ chicken and we washed it down with wine.
Niagra Falls was a first for obi and a return visit for C-lo. We came, we saw, we got soaked. We stopped off the main drag for Chicken Finger Sandwiches. Lindsay, Colleen's sister-in-law, said they were a must have, we agree.

Scenic Vermont
With a car that seems to run properly and a haggard new haircut we venture into the wilds of Vermont. Rhonda took us to a crystal clear river that was running fairly warm for June at the end of an incredibly green drive down some of the twistiest dirt roads we've seen yet. On our way back we stopped for a "Creamie" which is staple of the area, one that I highly recommend, involving soft serve ice cream doled out in massive proportion and swirled with some magic flavor syrup from the land of Oz or Wherever Puff the Magic Dragon is from.
In the afternoon Rhonda headed to work as Coley got home and took us to Burlington where we sampled Magic Hat's finest and rarest brew, if you've never had the Magic Hat Singlechair, tough sh#t it's hard to find ... and awesome. We then checked out the hippies playing Ultimate at UVM's campus, and the breathtaking views at Lake Champlain. For dinner we moved on to Mt. Pelier. For an apertif we stopped at Charlie O's, one of America's oldest dives sporting the slogan "Good Drinks & Bad Company. No Life Stories.", for PBRs and free pool. Dinner was world class burgers with Coley's Bossman and Ladyfriend, Roger and Erin.
